Canal+ and beIN Sports have entered into exclusive discussions with the aim of concluding a major distribution and sub-licensing agreement, the two groups announced.
This partnership would enable Canal+ to offer access to the beIN Sports channels as part of its various offers, as of June 1, 2020, and to become their exclusive distributor. Canal would thus become the only one able to offer the sports package, “on all platforms and with all third-party operators in France”, for a period of five years, renewable once.
This deal would also enable Canal+ to continue to offer League 1 to its subscribers beyond 2020. The agreement provides that beIN Sports, which holds part of the rights to the French championship for the period 2020-2024, will exclusively sub-license them to Canal+.
Mediapro has taken over the main rights of the competition, beIN Sports of lot 3 (matches on Saturday 9pm and Sunday 5pm), leaving Canal+ empty-handed.
If the new deal is confirmed, Canal+ and beIN would retain “their identities, brands and editorial autonomy”. The two actors would also continue to apply each independently for the various calls for tenders.
